NBA ROUNDUP : Blaylock Breaks Lock, and Hawks Beat Knicks

Mookie Blaylock capped a strong performance with a tiebreaking three-point shot with 39 seconds to play, lifting the Atlanta Hawks to an 89-85 victory over the New York Knicks on Friday night at Atlanta.

Blaylock’s basket gave the Hawks an 86-83 lead, and Grant Long stretched it to 88-83 by making two free throws with just under 25 seconds to play.

After Patrick Ewing scored to make it 88-85 with 11.9 seconds to play, Blaylock ended the scoring by making one of two free throws one second later.

Blaylock led the Hawks with 17 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. He had only one turnover in 39 minutes.

Steve Smith had 16, all in the first half, and Long added 15 for Atlanta. Ewing and Charles Smith each scored 20 for the Knicks.

It was the 934th victory for Hawk Coach Lenny Wilkens, four shy of the NBA record held by Red Auerbach.

Orlando 110, Miami 96--Orlando routed the Heat for the second time this season, building a 20-point lead in nine minutes and coasting at Miami.

Shaquille O’Neal led the Magic with 25 points. Anfernee Hardaway added 24 points, including five three-point shots, as Orlando won its fourth in a row at Miami Arena.

Billy Owens had a season-high 21 points for Miami.

Chicago 117, Detroit 96--B.J. Armstrong scored a season-high 22 points to lead the Bulls at Auburn Hills, Mich.

The Pistons were without their two leading scorers. Joe Dumars missed the game because of bronchitis and Grant Hill because of flu and a sore left foot.

To make matters worse for Detroit, point guard Lindsey Hunter left the game in the fourth quarter because of an injured right ankle.

The Bulls are 6-0 against the Pistons since Michael Jordan’s retirement. Detroit never led and didn’t get within 10 points in the second half.

Cleveland 96, Boston 89--John Williams scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Cavaliers at Boston.

Cleveland ended a three-game losing streak and won its third consecutive game in the Boston Garden.

Boston trailed, 70-59, at the end of three quarters but cut the Cavaliers’ lead to 76-70 with 8:09 left in the game. Tyrone Hill and Chris Mills each score four points in a 10-0 Cavalier run that put Cleveland ahead, 86-70 with 4:49 to play and the Celtics never caught up.

Dominique Wilkins led Boston with 27 points, 14 in the first quarter.

Indiana 94, Philadelphia 88--Derrick McKey scored 15 points and Dale Davis had 14 points and a season-high 18 rebounds as the Pacers won at Philadelphia.

LaSalle Thompson had 13 points and Reggie Miller scored 12 for the Pacers, who won their fourth in a row despite playing without Rik Smits and Antonio Davis, both sidelined because of injuries.

Jeff Malone had 17 points for Philadelphia, giving him a career total of 17,015 points. Malone became the 47th NBA player to go over 17,000 points.

Portland 116, Golden State 107--Clifford Robinson scored 28 points and Clyde Drexler added 26 as the Trail Blazers won at Portland.

Portland guard Rod Strickland, sidelined because of a wrist fracture since Nov. 15, started and had 15 points, 13 assists and four rebounds in 36 minutes.

Tim Hardaway led the Warriors with 21 points and David Wood added 14.
