SHOWS FOR YOUNGSTERS AND THEIR PARENTS TOO : Forget candy, family videos can make for sweet stocking stuffers

This year’s crop of holiday family fare includes original videos, classic shows and TV specials. Here’s a selective look:

ABC Video introduces the new PJ’s Unfunnybunny Christmas, an animated version of A Christmas Carol, narrated by Michael Redgrave, and The Little Crooked Christmas Tree ($10 apiece). For ages 2 to 10.

Paramount Home Video is re-releasing A Charlie Brown Christmas and Happy New Year, Charlie Brown ($13 apiece). “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” in which Charlie learns the meaning of the holiday through a homely little tree, is available in a gift set featuring a photo-frame tree ornament adorned with Snoopy and Woodstock ($17). For ages 2 and up.

Based on the 1960s song Christopher the Christmas Tree (CBS-Fox Video, $10), shaggy little tree Christopher dreams of becoming a beautiful tree, like his neighbors. The tape features original music and a patriotic undertone. For ages 2 to 8.

Also available as a storybook and cassette tape, The Night Before Christmas (Sony Wonder, $15) offers the animated musical tale of an orphan who discovers a miracle Christmas Eve when toys come alive. Parent’s Choice-approved. For ages 2 to 8.

Those sweet trolls are featured in the animated Norfin Adventures: A Norfin Noel (LIVE Home Video, $13), in which an alien Norfin with magical powers crash-lands near the Norfin neighborhood during Christmas. For ages 2 to 8.

Raggedy Ann & Andy: The Christmas Adventure (CBS Fox Video, $10) finds the duo trying to recover Santa’s sleigh and toys, stolen by errant elves. For ages 2 to 8.

Albert Finney and Alec Guinness are among the stars of the 1970 British musical version of Scrooge (Twentieth Century Fox, $15), based on Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.” For ages 4 and up.

The “Sony Wonder Nickelodeon Collection” offers the holiday-themed Rugrats: The Santa Experience ($10); Doug: The Christmas Story ($10); Lassie Come HO-HO Home and Lassie: A Christmas Tail (both $10). “HO-HO” also comes in a gift-package version with a stuffed collie ($17). For ages 4 and up.

A tale of Christ’s birth seen through the eyes of a donkey and an ox in The Story of Christmas (Hemdale Home Video, $15). For ages 2 to 8.

Adults also can enjoy the creativity of Will Vinton’s Claymation Christmas Celebration (LIVE Home Video, $13), offering goodies from the “California Raisins” creator. For ages 2 and up.

Winnie the Pooh forgets to deliver his friends’ Christmas wish list and he and Piglet dress up as Santa and a reindeer to pass out gifts. Christopher Robin saves the day in Winnie the Pooh and Christmas Too (Walt Disney Home Video, $15). For ages 2 to 8.

Nickelodeon celebrates the holidays with festively themed shows including: A Muppet Family Christmas (Wednesday , 7 p.m.; Friday , 10 a.m.); Doug’s Christmas (Friday , 8 p.m.); Rugrats’ Christmas (Friday , 8:30 p.m.); Rocko’s Modern Life “Night of the Elf” (Friday , 9 p.m.); Roundhouse Holiday Special (Friday, 9:30 p.m.). For ages 2 and up.

Murphy Brown rushes around on Christmas Eve to find young Avery the hottest toy around: a Power Ninja Demon doll. Monday, 9 p.m., CBS.

Home Improvement: The “perfect” Christmas is foiled by an in-law visit. Tuesday, 9 p.m. ABC.

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: During Christmas, Dr. Quinn hopes the town will accept a Jewish immigrant. Trisha Yearwood guests. Saturday, 8 p.m. CBS.

Classic episodes dealing with the Yuletide will be featured on Nick at Nite’s Christmas Party with episodes of “Bewitched,” “Dick Van Dyke,” “Dragnet,” “I Love Lucy,” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Sunday, beginning at 8:30 p.m.
