The Literacy Volunteers of America of the Buena Park Library were commended by the city recently for helping hundreds of adults learn to speak, read and write English.

From July, 1993, to July, 1994, the volunteers spent 3,839 hours tutoring 44 adults ranging in age from 25 to 60. That work would have earned the tutors about $49,907 if they had charged current market rates.

The tutors may also be helping to bring down the crime rate. About 80% of the felons in California jails today are illiterate, according to the Literacy Volunteers.

No one is required to have specialized education to be a tutor--just the ability to read and write English and the desire to help others learn.
