A 21-year-old Oxnard gang member was sentenced Thursday to 16 years to life in prison for his role in a fatal shooting at a Ventura motel last year.

Shaun Bolo received the mandatory sentence of 15 years to life for second-degree murder, plus one year for being armed with a gun. He pleaded guilty to the charges last month.

Bolo is the third defendant to be convicted in the Dec. 18, 1993, shooting of Paul Martinez, who was gunned down on the second-floor balcony of the Motel 6 on Johnson Road.

Steve Hidalgo, 20, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is serving a sentence of 18 years to life. Naomi Honohan, a 20-year-old former Channel Islands High School cheerleader and honor student, received two years in prison for being an accessory to the murder.

Still awaiting trial are Bolo’s brother, Willard, 23, who is charged with murder, and Alfonso Cortez, 21, accused of being an accessory to the crime.

All the defendants are members or associates of the same Oxnard gang, police said.

Authorities said that Martinez, a Whittier resident, was shot after getting into an argument with Honohan, who was attending a party in a room at the motel.

Shaun Bolo drove the vehicle from which the fatal shots were fired, Deputy Dist. Atty. Matthew J. Hardy said.
