SOCCER : Garfield Cruises to Victory on Cordoba’s Hat Trick

Garfield (4-0-1) rode Romeo Cordoba’s hat trick to a 5-0 victory over South Gate (0-6) in a Southeastern Conference match Thursday. Cordoba tallied his first goal in the 15th minute off a pass from Fermin Diaz. In the 22nd minute, Cordoba caught the Ram goalkeeper off guard and smashed the ball home on a corner kick. Cordoba then scored on a free kick in the 50th minute, putting the game well out of reach.

Ivan Valiente and Gerardo Gomez rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 60th and 78th minutes of the match.

Los Angeles 2, University 2--The visiting Romans (4-1-1) overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to tie the match, 2-2, in a Coastal Conference game Thursday. Roman forward Brook Berhanu notched his seventh goal of the season in the 45th minute and Bairon Calles scored the equalizer in the 60th.

Bell 1, Jordan 0--The unbeaten Eagles had a rough time with the Bulldogs but won a Southeastern Conference matchup at Jordan on Thursday. Bell forward Sergio Ramirez scored on an assist from Jose Leal to keep the Eagles’ undefeated at 4-0-3. The Bulldogs fell to 2-3-1.

Roosevelt 2, Huntington Park 0--The Roughriders won a tough battle over the Spartans at Huntington Park in a Southeastern Conference matchup.

Vicente Mejia scored on cross from Fernando Jimenez and Jesus Perez also tallied for the Roughriders (2-1-3).

The match referees called the game early because of misbehavior from the crowd. Spartans coach Herman Weller said he would protest he referee’s decision.

Belmont 1, Franklin 0--Hector Alvarado scored on a perfect pass from Pedro Orellana to keep Belmont a perfect 7-0 on the season in a victory at Franklin.
