The Big Street (AMC Monday at 10:30 a.m.) is Lucille Ball’s favorite among her movies. Here she’s in the delightful Damon Runyon tale that casts her as a tough Manhattan nightclub singer adored by Henry Fonda’s shy busboy; surprisingly, the denouement parallels that of “Midnight Cowboy.’ Directed by Irving Reis.
Gas Food Lodging (TMC early Tuesday at midnight), Allison Anders’ 1992 film, reveals real shrewdness and compassion in her depiction of the ordinary lives of a waitress (Brooke Adams) and her two daughters (Ione Skye, Fairuza Balk)--and also a lyrical sense of romance and mystery.
