COSTA MESA : Seismic Testing of City Buildings on Agenda
The City Council will vote tonight on whether to spend $48,500 to conduct seismic evaluations of certain city buildings, including City Hall, the police station and the downtown community center.
If approved, the task would go to Brandow & Johnston Associates of Santa Ana Heights.
According to a staff report written by assistant engineer Ernesto Munoz and public services Director William J. Morris, recent earthquakes in the Costa Mesa area have made it necessary to carry out the seismic studies, especially since the buildings are to be used “extensively in a natural disaster.”
To date, no analyses or determination of seismic deficiencies have been performed on any city facility, the report states.
On Sept. 29, the city started looking for engineering firms to do the work. Five submitted bids, and by Oct. 28 three of the companies were named as finalists, with Brandow & Johnston selected to do the work, according to the staff report.
The council will also vote on whether to spend $103,417 to overhaul a Costa Mesa helicopter engine.
The job would go to National Airmotive Corp., according to staff reports.
