Share

Residents interested in being considered to fill a two-year term on the City Council can pick up applications at the city clerk’s office.

The council will appoint a candidate to fill the vacancy created by Councilman Jim Silva’s recent election to the County Board of Supervisors.

Silva will resign from the seven-member council and take his supervisorial seat Jan. 3.

The council agreed that applications will be accepted until Jan. 9. Interviews are scheduled for Jan. 17 and an appointment could take place that night or soon after.

Each council member made up a list of desired qualifications for an appointee. The lists will be given to applicants.

The council is seeking an applicant with integrity, professionalism, dedication and commitment to the city, a willingness to listen to the public, open-mindedness and a knowledge of the city.

Mayor Victor Leipzig said that a successful candidate would be a longtime resident of the city, have extensive community involvement and good written and language skills.

“In the interest of diversity, I suppose we might look at such backgrounds as law, banking, architecture or public safety services--fields that none of us represent,” Leipzig said.

So far, five people have applied. They are Thom Doney and Planning Commissioner Roy H. Richardson, both of whom vied for a seat on the council in the November election; Clayton King, Michael Rothmiller and Richard Campagne.
