OXNARD : Nuns’ Housing Plan Approved in Concept

Share

The Oxnard City Council has approved in concept a plan by a consortium of nuns to build two low-cost housing projects in downtown Oxnard across from the current Oxnard High School.

Mercy Charities, a nonprofit developer comprising the Sisters of Mercy, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace and other religious congregations, said the proposed developments would help ease a shortage of low-cost housing in Oxnard. They are asking the city to share part of the expected $12.4-million cost.

The sisters, who have built or are proposing developments in 10 California counties, have plans for a 64-unit low-cost housing project for families and a 40-unit development for seniors.

The homes would be built at Hobson Way and 5th Street across from the First Baptist Church of Oxnard and could be completed by 1996.

Council members said late Tuesday that the project would require an amendment to the city’s General Plan and must go before them again early next year before it can move forward.

The nuns plan to ask the city for a contribution of less than $1 million for each project, said Sister Diane Clyne of the San Francisco-based consortium.
