ORANGE COUNTY IN BANKRUPTCY : DAILY DEVELOPMENTS

Share

MORE CUTS SEEN: The county must cut $80 million more beginning July 1, Orange County officials said. News of the additional cuts came just a day after top managers stunned the county by announcing cutbacks in dozens of departments, from courts to social services. The exact number of layoffs was still undetermined Friday. Supervisor William G. Steiner said the downsizing is expected to become more severe.

MONEY DISTRIBUTED: Distribution of property tax money to cities, schools and special districts began. Many city officials were so eager to receive the money that they showed up in person to collect rather than wait for the checks to arrive by mail.

FROZEN AID: Money used by four agencies to help people meet the rent is frozen in the county fund. And an agreement collapsed between some shelters and the Sheriff’s Department to send extra jail food to the homeless.

REASSURING EMPLOYEES: County department heads spent the day reassuring employees that most of their jobs were safe. Many managers said they were relieved the cuts weren’t worse and said specifics of the department reductions would take at least a week to work out.

NEW REVENUE SOUGHT: County officials sought new ways to raise money, including selling or leasing county-owned properties. Other possibilities include renting landfill space to other counties and signing long-term leases with vendors in exchange for lower prices.

BLUE CHRISTMAS: With layoffs looming, workers worried about their future and wondered whether they will have jobs when the holidays are over. Workers huddled in hallways and whispered about their situation before returning to desks to await further updates. “There is a real sadness and a stunned silence,” one said.
