Los Angeles’ South Vermont Avenue, once a vibrant commercial street, was done in by the loss of the electric trolleys and the rise of mini-malls, among other things. But a glimmer of a turnaround is in the works. A contest sponsored by First Interstate Bank has produced a striking design for a neglected block at 81st Street. Its mix of housing and business space suggests a new pattern of use for commercial corridors. The winning architect, Daniel Solomon, is interviewed for today’s Conversation.
