The class, which focuses on teaching children ways of resolving problems without violence, will be taught at San Gabriel High and at Alhambra High this fall, said Supt. Heber Meeks. The class was started at Mark Keppel after racially charged fights between Asian American and Latino students.

PASADENA: The Caltech Pre-College Science Initiative, which has worked with the Pasadena Unified School District to develop a hands-on, kindergarten-through-sixth-grade science program, has received a five-year grant of $6 million from the National Science Foundation that will enable it to expand the program into selected school districts throughout California. Scientists work with teachers to provide a course that emphasizes learning by investigating and in which students have the opportunity to create experiments and learn about science firsthand. With the grant, Caltech plans to target urban school districts throughout the state.
