THE BOWLS DAILY REPORT : ORANGE / NEBRASKA vs. MIAMI, Sunday : Osborne Quarterback Decision Today

Nebraska Coach Tom Osborne said the decision on who will start at quarterback for Sunday’s game--Tommie Frazier or Brook Berringer--was made after Wednesday’s practice. But Osborne said he won’t make a public announcement until today.

Osborne said Frazier and Berringer will play against the Hurricanes.

Frazier, who hasn’t played since Sept. 24 because of a blood clot in his right calf, is 4-0 as a starter. Berringer, his replacement, is 7-0. Matt Turman, who filled in for Berringer, is 1-0.

Osborne said he will choose a starter based on practice performances.

“There’s really no fair situation,” Frazier said. “I think that’s as fair as it’s going to get.”

Contrary to earlier reports, the Orange Bowl game doesn’t move to nearby Joe Robbie Stadium until 1997. Unfortunately, nobody told Erickson.

“The thing that’s great about this game . . . is that the last Orange Bowl in the Orange Bowl is going to have the University of Miami playing, so that’s kind of special to us as well,” he said.

An honest mistake.

However, with the new bowl alliance taking effect next season, there will be changes. No longer will the Big Eight Conference (soon to be Big 12) champion earn an automatic bid to the Orange Bowl, as it has since 1976. With the exception of the Big Ten and Pacific 10, all conference affiliations with the major bowls will cease.

Under the new three-year arrangement, the Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowls will take turns putting together the best possible game. The Fiesta Bowl will get first selection next season.
