Essay Contest Focuses on Colonial History

The Tustin Katuktu Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution is sponsoring an essay contest on American history for Tustin Unified School District students in the fifth through eighth grades.

The topic is: “Living in America in Colonial Days: 1607-1776.” Essays must be 300 to 600 words for fifth- and sixth-graders and 600 to 1,000 words for seventh- and eighth-graders.

Essays will be judged on historical accuracy, adherence to the subject, organization of material, originality, interest, neatness, spelling, grammar and punctuation.

25 Students Receive Test Score Honors

Twenty-five students at Santa Margarita Catholic High School have been named AP scholars in recognition of their scores on the college-level Advanced Placement examinations.

Yvette Anaya qualified for an AP scholar with distinction award by earning grades of three or above on five or more AP examinations.

Nine students qualified for an AP scholar with honors award. They are: James Abrams, John Bamford, Richard Guy, Jaime Hannefield, Jason Kramb, Michelle Lavoie, Eryn Murphy, Kelly Ojdana and Robert Omahoney.

Program Readies Kids for Kindergarten

Huntington Beach City School District is offering a program for children not already enrolled in kindergarten who will be 5 years old on or before June 16.

The program begins Jan. 30 and provides what officials promise will be a rich and stimulating learning environment, encouraging hands-on learning and active exploration with people and objects.

Curriculum and learning activities are based on the needs and abilities of students, rather than on age alone.

The program will be offered at three schools: Perry Elementary School, 19231 Harding Lane, 8:10 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.; Moffett Elementary School, 8800 Burlcrest Ave., 8:10 a.m. to 1:25 p.m.; and, Eader Elementary School, 9291 Banning Ave., 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Early registration is advised and enrollment is on a first-come basis. More information is available by calling (714) 964-8888.

Spanish Club Meets at Elementary School

The Spanish language is providing some after-school fun at Danbrook Elementary School. A Spanish Club meets from 3 to 4 p.m. each Tuesday at the school, where fifth-grade teachers Traci Welbourne and Joan Barnes introduce students to a language used in their communities and in their future workplaces.
