BURBANK : Woman Injured in Fall From Escalator

A 42-year-old woman was in serious condition Thursday after she rode down the handrail of a moving escalator, slipped and fell 20 feet onto a marble floor at the Media City Center shopping mall in Burbank.

Nelly Carlson, of North Hollywood, was rushed to County-USC Medical Center on Wednesday suffering from a fractured pelvis, authorities said.

Mall and police officials said it was unclear why Carlson sat precariously on the handrail shortly before the Media City Center closed at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

She was reportedly at the mall by herself.

“She got on the third-floor escalator near the rotunda, put her leg over the rail and rode down like she was sliding down a banister,” Burbank Police Lt. Joe Valento said. “When she got to the second floor, her leg got caught and she flipped over.”

Carlson landed on the ground-level marble floor head and shoulder first, police said.

By the time police arrived, she was conscious and complaining of pain in her leg.

The mall’s general manager, Dan Millman, said the fall was the first such accident at the Media City Center since it opened in 1991.
