COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Ventura Improves to 18-0 With Tournament Title

Freshman guard Shannon Taylor put on a shooting display as the Ventura College men’s basketball team improved to 18-0 with a 106-89 victory over Irvine Valley on Thursday night in the championship game of the Hancock tournament.

Taylor, selected the tournament’s most valuable player, scored a game-high 34 points, connecting on seven of nine three-point attempts. Taylor, a native of Fresno, made eight of 11 shots and all 11 of his free throws. He scored 51 points in the tournament. Center Curtis Ganes, who scored 12 points, and forward Hakeen Ward, who scored eight and had six rebounds, also were chosen all-tournament. Sophomore guard Lance Fay added 13 points for the Pirates.

Ventura led, 54-49, at halftime, then began the second half with a 24-5 run.

Dak Wilson scored 26 points to lead Irvine Valley (12-6).

Moorpark 94, El Camino 67--Five Moorpark players scored in double figures and the Raiders held El Camino to 36% shooting--including four of 23 three-point attempts--to take fifth place at the Canyons tournament.

WOMEN

Pacific 76, CS Northridge 41--Shannon Crouse had nine points and 10 rebounds for Northridge (0-10) in a nonconference game at Pacific (7-3).

Moorpark 69, Mesa 64--Sara Marroquin made four free throws in the final 13 seconds to give Moorpark a consolation victory in the Grossmont tournament. Janette Oriza led the Raiders with 37.

Pierce 62, Valley 55--Julie Kawamoto scored 15 points to lead Pierce (8-4) in the consolation semifinals of the Fullerton tournament.
