Two passengers in an allegedly stolen van were killed and the driver critically injured early Saturday when a one-mile police chase ended in a crash, authorities said.

The driver of another vehicle, which was hit in the 2:40 a.m. accident, suffered a broken leg, police said.

According to police reports, a witness saw two men and a woman steal the van from a North Hollywood business shortly after midnight and drive through a locked gate in the 11800 block of Sherman Way.

The witness followed the van to a motel in the 6400 block of Lankershim Boulevard, about a mile away, and called police, said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Christopher Vasquez. Patrol officers later saw the three people leave the motel in the van and tried to stop them, Vasquez said. None of the three, estimated to be between 18 and 20, had been identified Saturday.

The van, a 1986 Ford Astro, then sped north on Lankershim Boulevard between 60 and 80 m.p.h., Officer Scott Walton said.

At Sherman Way, it sideswiped a car stopped at a red light and continued into the intersection, striking a 1986 Ford Bronco, Walton said.

The driver of the Bronco, whose name was not released, was treated at Holy Cross Medical Center for a broken leg. No one in the stopped car was injured.

Walton said the driver of the van was in a coma at Holy Cross and would be charged with vehicular manslaughter if he recovers.

A Los Angeles County coroner’s investigator said Saturday that a fingerprint analysis had not established the identities of the two dead passengers.
