EL RIO : 10 People Left Homeless After Fire at House

A house fire in El Rio left 10 people homeless Tuesday and caused about $80,000 in property damage, authorities said.

No one was injured in the blaze, at a duplex in the 900 block of East Collins Street, fire officials said. Two birds, a dog and a turtle also were unharmed, officials said.

An overheated appliance cord caused the fire, officials said.

Capt. Chris Donabedian of the Oxnard Fire Department said the fire, which started at about noon, consumed two bedrooms and a hallway. He said it took about 10 minutes to get the fire under control.
