A Rental Vehicle for Those Terminator Wanna-Bes

Share

Want to be mistaken for Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Budget Rent a Car is banking on it.

In a few weeks, the car agency’s Beverly Hills outlet will be renting out a Humvee, the off-road monster that replaced the jeep as the U.S. Army’s all-purpose vehicle.

The hummer, officially called the M998 cargo-troop carrier, won’t come cheap. The rental price will be $250 a day.

Nor should customers expect easy driving in urban settings.

The Humvee, described as a cross between a fat car and a squat truck, is 7.2 feet wide, not counting the mirrors, so two parking spaces and wide lanes are a must. Top speed is only 83 m.p.h.

According to the manufacturer, a Humvee can ford a 30-inch deep stream, drive through two feet of snow or haul a payload of two tons.

And, of course, Arnold has one.

ON TO WASHINGTON?: Rancho Palos Verdes Councilwoman Susan Brooks has decided against going to court to challenge the results of her unsuccessful race against Rep. Jane Harman(D-Rolling Hills).

But Brooks, who has not yet conceded the contest, said she is working with an attorney to take a challenge to Washington, and the House Oversight Committee.

The committee could investigate and force a full House vote to overturn the election results if it finds widespread voter fraud.

“It’s the House of Representatives,” Brooks said. “They can do anything they want.”

Voter fraud is exactly what Brooks is alleging in her shot at overturning the election. Two groups with ties to Republican supporters, the Committee for Election Integrity in El Segundo and the Voter Fraud Task Force in Orange County, say voters outside the district cast ballots and others listed vacant addresses when they went to the polls.

“On the face of it,” Brooks said, “it doesn’t smell good.”

The Harman campaign is unimpressed. “She’s a lot like someone going to Las Vegas dreaming of winning millions of dollars,” said Harman spokesman Roy Behr. “Then, after she loses all her money, instead of accepting reality, she stands there with a glazed look saying space aliens stole her money.”
