A good Samaritan who came to the aid of a stalled motorist on the freeway was struck and killed after being hit by two vehicles Saturday, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

The fatal accident occurred at 4:25 a.m. Saturday after a 32-year-old man saw a stalled motorist in the fast lane of northbound Interstate 5, north of Avenida Magdalena in San Clemente, authorities said.

The man pulled his car over to the shoulder, stopped and got out. He then ran across the freeway and told Jennifer Yu of Irvine to put her car in neutral so the two could push it out of traffic and onto the center divider.

A driver approaching at 60 m.p.h. failed to see the disabled car, swerved and clipped Yu’s vehicle, authorities said. The force of the impact knocked the good Samaritan across the freeway, where he was struck by two vehicles.

Yu was not injured in the accident, authorities said. The drivers of the vehicles that hit Yu’s car and the good Samaritan were not cited or identified.

The victim, a Marine, was not identified pending notification of his relatives, said a spokesman for the Orange County coroner’s office.
