COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Maryland Gets All Fouled Up in Setback at North Carolina

Share

Gary Williams certainly didn’t expect to beat No. 1 North Carolina with one hand tied behind his back.

The Maryland coach faced a similar handicap Saturday night as star center Joe Smith battled foul trouble all game and ended up playing only 20 minutes of a 100-90 Atlantic Coast Conference loss to the top-ranked Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Rasheed Wallace scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half, taking advantage of Smith’s foul trouble.

“It hurts us like (it would) if Rasheed Wallace played only 20 minutes for Carolina,” said Williams, whose No. 7-ranked Terrapins, 11-3 overall and 1-1 in the ACC, saw their five-game winning streak halted. “You have to adjust and get to where your other people can play.”

Wallace won the high-profile battle of sophomore centers and the Tar Heels (10-1, 1-1), who lost to North Carolina State, 80-70, Wednesday night, won the matchup of the conference’s highest scoring teams.

“It was like Kareem and Wilt, one of those type things,” Wallace said of his center matchup with Smith, referring to NBA Hall of Famers Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Wilt Chamberlain. “There’s more to come.”

The Tar Heels also avoided an 0-2 league start for the first time since 1980.

No. 3 Arkansas 97, Tennessee 79--Corliss Williamson scored seven of his 25 points late in the first half and the Razorbacks (12-2, 1-1) rolled to victory over the Volunteers (5-5, 0-2) in a Southeastern Conference game in Fayetteville, Ark.

Williamson’s points came during a 12-4 spurt that helped Arkansas to a 14-point halftime lead.

Tennessee scored only one point in the final 4:22 of the first half.

No. 4 Massachusetts 87, La Salle 64--Derek Kellogg scored 18 points as the Minutemen (8-1) survived a lackluster homecoming performance by Lou Roe (two points) in a victory over La Salle (7-3) in Atlantic City, N.J., and staked a claim to the No. 1 ranking.

No. 5 Kansas 97, Southern Methodist 58--Freshman Raef LaFrentz scored 18 points and sophomore Jarod Haase added 17 as the Jayhawks (10-1) defeated the Mustangs (3-8) at Dallas, thereby staying in contention for a No. 1 ranking.

Kansas raced to a 23-point halftime lead, using the height advantage of 6-foot-11 LaFrentz and 7-2 Greg Ostertag (10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks) to out-muscle the smaller Mustangs.

No. 8 Kentucky 80, South Carolina 55--Tony Delk scored 18 points and the Wildcats (8-2, 2-0) hit 17 three-pointers--its highest total in four years--in an SEC victory over South Carolina (3-10, 0-2) at Columbia, S.C.

Kentucky’s long-range shooting tied an SEC mark for most three-pointers in a game. Kentucky set the mark against LSU in 1990, Coach Rick Pitino’s first season, and reached it one other time before Saturday.

Malik Russell had 18 points to lead South Carolina.

No. 10 Syracuse 89, Seton Hall 77--John Wallace had 21 points and the Orangemen (10-1, 3-0) shot nearly 70% in the opening half before using an 18-4 run in the second half to pull away from the Pirates (10-3, 1-2) for a Big East victory at Syracuse, N.Y.

It was the 10th consecutive victory for Syracuse, which stopped Seton Hall’s nine-game winning streak.

No. 24 Georgia Tech 75, No. 11 Duke 68--In an ACC game at Atlanta, Travis Best scored 22 points and James Forrest had 18 as the Yellow Jackets (9-4, 1-1) handed the Blue Devils (9-4, 0-2), playing without Coach Mike Krzyzewski, their second loss in a row.

The Yellow Jackets never trailed and never lost the lead after Forrest broke a 6-6 tie on a layup with 15:49 left in the opening half.

Krzyzewski, admitted to the Duke University Hospital on Friday, is resting a back not fully recovered from October back surgery.

Cherokee Parks led the Blue Devils with 22 points.

No. 12 Georgetown 71, Miami 64--Freshman Allen Iverson’s tie-breaking field goal with 2:39 remaining keyed the Hoyas (9-1, 3-0) to a Big East victory over the Hurricanes (5-5, 0-3) at Landover, Md.

The Hoyas have won nine in a row since an opening game loss to defending national champion Arkansas.

The Hurricanes held a 58-50 lead with 6:51 left. Georgetown, however, rallied to tie the score at 60-60 on two free throws by Don Reid with 3:09 remaining, and the Hoyas took the lead for good 30 seconds later on Iverson’s short jumper.

DeClercq scored 10 points during the burst that helped Florida rebound from losing its Southeastern Conference opener to Louisiana State Tuesday.

Ronnie McMahan led Vanderbilt with 23 points.
