COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : CSUN Women (0-13) Sink Deeper in Season of Futility

The Cal State Northridge women continued their futile trek through the 1994-95 basketball season with another loss Saturday, falling San Diego, 71-54, at Northridge.

The Matadors (0-13) made only 29% of their shots, sinking 18 of 62 against a team that came into the game with a 3-6 record.

Shannon Crouse was the sole bright spot for the Matadors--who have 18 consecutive losses dating to last year--scoring 18 points with eight rebounds and four steals.

Michelle Brovelli had 12 points, 17 rebounds and five steals for the Toreros, and reserve Lorice Watson added 14 points in 17 minutes.

Canyons 90, Santa Barbara 44--Stephanie Labor led the Western State Conference interdivisional rout with 24 points and 12 rebounds at Canyons. Kerri Garland added 17 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots and Michelle Boreham chipped in with five points and nine assists.

Canyons (17-4, 1-1), ranked 12th in the state, cruised to a 19-point halftime behind Labor’s 14 points. Santa Barbara dropped to 4-15, 0-2.

Pierce 70, Moorpark 50--Michelle Johnson had 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Brahmas (9-7, 1-2) in a WSC game at Woodland Hills. Kim Butler added 12 points, and Julie Kawamoto and Dianne Lakatta each scored 10.

Ventura 84, Valley 75--Julie Hardy pumped in 29 points to lead the Pirates (16-1, 3-0) to a WSC interdivisional victory at Valley.

The Pirates sealed Valley’s fate with an 18-0 run early in the game after the Monarchs jumped in front, 3-0.

Vonya Dangerfield had 16 points for Valley (12-7, 2-1), and reserve center Erica Upton added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Antelope Valley 90, Mt. San Jacinto 84--Orville Turner scored 29 points and Corey Bolton added 24 for the Marauders (13-5, 1-0) in a Foothill Conference game at Lancaster. Both players had four rebounds.

Troy Coutee added 13 points and four rebounds.

Moorpark 54, West L.A. 50--Paul Foster had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Raiders in a WSC game at Moorpark.

Santa Barbara 65, Canyons 63--Mark Small hit a shot from the baseline with two seconds remaining to give Santa Barbara a WSC interdivisional victory.

Rashe Dorsey scored 15 points and Marcell Crain added 14 for Canyons (7-10).

Westmont 87, Western Washington 80--Sean Martin, a 1991 Agoura High graduate, scored a game-high 33 points--including a school-record 10 three-pointers--while leading the Warriors to a third-place finish in the Tom Byron Classic at Santa Barbara.
