Genovese to Be Feted by Friends

An appreciation night for longtime area baseball scout George Genovese has been scheduled for Jan. 20 at Anaheim Stadium.

Genovese, who coached and scouted for the San Francisco Giants for the past 34 years, was released by the club Dec. 31 as part of organizational changes.

Genovese, 72, signed several players who reached the major league, including Jack Clark, George Foster, Dave Kingman, Garry Maddox, Gary Matthews and Royce Clayton.

The event will be hosted by former major leaguer Ken Brett and begins at 7 p.m. Dinner starts at 8.

Kevin Chong has been named baseball coach at Highland Hall High, Athletic Director Humberto Ramirez announced Tuesday.

Chong, 23, is an assistant boys’ basketball coach at the school.

High School Basketball

The Newbury Park High girls’ basketball team has been ranked No. 1 in the state among Division III schools by Cal-Hi Sports.

Newbury Park (15-1) also was rated seventh in the overall state poll. Alemany (10-3) and Buena (6-2) were rated ninth and 10th.

Fillmore (11-1) and Village Christian (11-4) were rated eighth and 10th in Division IV.

Crescenta Valley’s boys’ team fell to ninth in the state poll and fifth in Division I. Harvard-Westlake (14-1) was third in Division III.

College Basketball

Melissa Wood of Cal Lutheran has been selected the NCAA Division III West region player of the week. Wood, a sophomore guard from Thousand Oaks High, scored 62 points in two games. She was 22 of 35 from the field, including 12 of 22 three-pointers.
