Two men escaped serious injury Sunday night when their car hit an Amtrak train that had just left the Santa Ana train station.

Rodolfo Martinez, 31, of Laguna Niguel and his passenger, Rafael Martinez Cruz, 27, of Tustin suffered only minor injuries when they hit the train in the 1700 block of East McFadden Avenue near Ritchey Street at 7:45 p.m., Sgt. Don Robertson said.

Martinez swerved when he saw the warning arm was down on the railroad crossing gate and hit the train broadside, Robertson said.

The train had traveled only about two blocks from the station and none of its passengers or crew was injured, an Amtrak spokesman said.

The train, which was traveling from Los Angeles to San Diego, was stopped after the accident and the passengers were bused to their destinations, the spokesman said.

Martinez and Cruz were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for treatment.

Robertson said Martinez had been drinking, but it was not known if he was intoxicated.
