Countywide : KOCE, Toshiba to Honor County’s Top Science Teachers

Orange County science teachers will be honored for their innovative teaching methods today when Toshiba America Companies of Southern California and KOCE-TV present the annual “Encouraging Excellence in Science Education Award.”

Winners will be announced during a ceremony at the public television station’s studios at Golden West College in Huntington Beach. Toshiba has sponsored the “NOVA” science series on KOCE-TV for the past six years.

A teacher from an elementary school, middle school and high school will each be presented with a $500 cash prize. One of the teachers--the grand prize winner--also will receive a notebook computer.

The elementary school finalists are: Maureen E. Allen of Brywood Elementary in Irvine, Marlene K. Flores of Cawthon Elementary in Cypress, and Phyllis M. Hamilton of Twila Reid Elementary in Anaheim.

The middle school educators are: Christine K. Cantrell of Hewes Middle School in Santa Ana, George P. Fotinakes of Marine Middle School in Huntington Beach, and Susan Marie Pritchard of Washington Middle School in La Habra.

High school teachers in the award finals are: Scott E. Harker of Los Alamitos High, Susan M. Hayden of El Camino Real High in Placentia, and Norbert J. Peterson of Canyon High in Anaheim.

Judges for this fourth annual awards program are Edward Rodevich, the coordinator of mathematics and science for the county Department of Education; Rita Peterson, a UC Irvine professor; and Tom Russell, a science teacher at San Pedro High School.

The award program is open to educators from public and private schools in the county.
