Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan announced the appointment Thursday of lobbyist and political consultant Steven Afriat to the Animal Regulation Commission.

Afriat was ex-City Councilman Zev Yaroslavsky’s chief of staff. Afriat will replace Ellen Stein, who took a seat on the Board of Public Works.

City records show that Afriat, as a lobbyist, has represented land developer Warner Ridge Partners as well as an insurance company, a dry cleaners, an investment company, a recycling company and a company named Hollywood Spa.

As a political consultant, Afriat ran ex-Councilman Michael Woo’s reelection campaign in 1989 and also worked on former Councilwoman Pat Russell’s 1987 campaign.

Riordan also announced the reappointments of attorney Alf Brandt, oil company executive Carolyn Green and public affairs consultant Katherine Moret to the Metropolitan Water District board.

The mayor also named David Kim, managing director of an engineering firm, to the city pension board.
