COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Pacific Women Edge UC Irvine, 66-64, With Last-Second Shot

Pacific’s Missy Ross hit a shot from nine feet out with .1 second showing on the clock, handing the UC Irvine women’s basketball team its first Big West Conference loss, 66-64, Friday night at the Bren Center.

Tamera Thomas hit a three-pointer with 51 seconds left to bring the Anteaters to within 64-62. Allah-mi Basheer then hit a lay-up to tie the score. Basheer missed the ensuing foul shot and Pacific got the rebound with six seconds remaining. After a timeout, Ross hit the game-winning shot.

Basheer finished with 18 points and eight rebounds for Irvine (8-5, 5-1). Jinelle Williams added 15. Paloma Moriana scored 18 for Pacific (11-6, 4-2).

In California Coastal Conference men’s basketball:

Pacific Christian 96, Cal State Maritime 68--Charles Ross had 22 points and Roger Traynham had 17 for Pacific Christian (15-9, 6-0). Alan Washington had 21 points and Jeff Lind had 16 points for Cal State Maritime (4-13, 0-4).

In nonconference women’s swimming:

UC Irvine’s first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke and breaststroke were the difference in its 45-39 victory over Cal State Northridge in a tri-meet at USC. The Anteaters lost to USC, 45-39.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

UC Irvine’s men lost to USC (47-42) and Cal State Northridge (45-42). The Anteaters managed to tie USC for second place in the 200-yard medley relay. Erik Walton, Omar Amr, David Durden and Bret Foreman finished in 1:39.36 for UCI.
