Ducks’ McSween Suffers Severely Slashed Wrist

Mighty Duck defenseman Don McSween’s season is probably over after he was severely cut on his right wrist by a skate blade in a bloody incident Saturday night during the Ducks’ 4-3 victory over Winnipeg.

McSween has lacerated tendons and appeared to have also cut his ulnar nerve and was to undergo surgery Saturday night at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Center, said Chris Bourdon, the emergency room physician who treated him.

“He is fine,” said Bourdon, who estimated McSween lost “a cup or two” of blood. “When he got here he was in no danger.”

McSween was directly in front of the Ducks’ bench when the Jets’ Keith Tkachuk accidentally stepped on his wrist with five minutes left in the game. Duck trainer Blynn DeNiro immediately jumped over the boards as blood began to spurt from McSween’s wrist and rushed him off the ice, where he was also attended to by Jets’ team physician Michael MacKay. MacKay credited DeNiro and the Jets’ training staff with quickly applying compression to the injury.

McSween was also involved in a skate-blade incident against Winnipeg last season, when he accidentally stepped on the boot of the Jets’ Teemu Selanne, severing his Achilles’ tendon and ending his season.
