SUN VALLEY : Slaying Suspect Turns Himself In to Police

Los Angeles police announced Tuesday that they have arrested a suspect wanted in connection with the slaying of a Los Angeles man whose body was found dumped near the Foothill Freeway in Sun Valley.

Caltrans workers found Davinder Singh Gill’s body in a ravine Jan. 9, as they cleared a drain along the freeway near La Tuna Canyon Road and Sunland Boulevard.

LAPD Detective Frank Bishop said Gill was reported missing Dec. 28 and that he was last seen in the company of Raghbir Purewal, 49, who was accompanied by his attorney Monday night when he turned himself in at the Foothill Division station.

Purewal and Gill had been involved in a dispute over Purewal’s daughter, who was dating Gill’s roommate, which is apparently against her family’s religion, Bishop said.

“Purewal was upset that (Gill) was allowing the relationship to go on,” Bishop said.

Bishop said Purewal showed up at the Subway sandwich shop in Hollywood, which Gill managed. Gill disappeared after leaving the shop to talk to Purewal, Bishop said. Gill’s beaten body was found more than a week later.

Police are searching for Purewal’s daughter, Kamaljit Kaur, 19, who police believe is being hidden by family members who have been moving around hotels in Arcadia and Rosemead.

“She hasn’t been seen and we’re trying to find her,” Bishop said. “We just want to ensure her safety. We believe the family is hiding her from us.”

Detectives say they would also like to question the girl’s brother, Harvinder Singh, 20.
