School Forums to Air O.C. Bankruptcy Fears

Share

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District will have a community forum Thursday on the district’s financial situation since the collapse of the Orange County bond pool, in which the district had invested $80 million.

The forum, scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, is designed to allow parents and other members of the community to ask questions and make comments on the district’s involvement in the bond pool and to offer suggestions on how to improve the district’s position. It is the second of four planned sessions.

The state Education Code requires school districts to put their money on deposit with their respective counties, so the district had no choice in depositing funds. That money is now frozen in the county bankruptcy.

District Supt. Mac Bernd and Finance Director Michael Fine will give a brief presentation at each session, followed by an opportunity for those attending to ask questions about the district’s financial situation, the progress of the county bankruptcy and its impact on the district.

District officials decided to have the forums in response to community requests for information. Officials said although information from the county is scant, they hope to present as much as is available.

The Thursday forum will be at Estancia High School, 2323 Placentia Ave., Costa Mesa. Additional forums are scheduled for Feb. 1 at Costa Mesa High School, 2650 Fairview Road, Costa Mesa; and Feb. 9 at Corona del Mar High School, 2101 Eastbluff Drive, Newport Beach.
