Deputies were searching Wednesday for a gang member accused of attempted murder who was erroneously released from a juvenile jail, authorities said.

They were looking for Eduardo Nunez, 18, of Palmdale, who was released by mistake by the Los Angeles County Probation Department, said Lt. Daniel Castillo of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The probation department reported the accidental release to the Antelope Valley Sheriff’s Station on Wednesday afternoon. Just before 6 p.m., deputies received a tip that Nunez’ car was in the area of 30th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard but a search found no sign of him, Castillo said.

Nunez was arrested on suspicion of shooting Mark Nevlin of Palmdale in the back on Nov. 28 as Nevlin used a public phone booth in the 3000 block of East Palmdale Boulevard, the same area where his car was allegedly spotted Wednesday, Castillo said.

Nunez was arrested last Wednesday on suspicion of the shooting and of having a sawed-off shotgun and was being held without bail, Castillo said.

He described Nunez as 5 feet, 10 inches tall, and thin, with black hair.
