Cunningham Leaves Raiders for Chiefs; Fifth Assistant Gone From ’94 Staff

Share

Gunther Cunningham, Raider defensive line coach, has resigned to take the same position with the Kansas City Chiefs.

He is the fourth defensive coach and the fifth assistant to leave the team since the end of the season. The other three defensive coaches--Ray Hamilton, Jack Stanton and Odis McKinney--were fired. Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations and the special teams coach, left to go to the Rams.

Cunningham, 46, spent four seasons with the Raiders. He had been the team’s defensive coordinator but was demoted after the 1993 season. Cunningham had previously spent six seasons as defensive line coach with the San Diego Chargers.

Only defensive coordinator John Fox and linebacker coach Jim Haslett remain from the Raider defensive staff. The team finished fourth in the conference defensively last season.
