Lights, Signs to Be Put on Busy Drive

Two 45-m.p.h. speed limit signs, a double-flashing yellow traffic light and four pedestrian warning signs will be placed along Pacific Island Drive in two weeks. Neighborhood residents had complained about speeding motorists.

The City Council last week approved the changes along the street after more than a dozen residents showed up at an earlier traffic commission meeting and asked that something be done, city traffic engineer Dave Rogers said.

Two existing 45-m.p.h. speed limit signs will also be enlarged along Pacific Island Drive at two intersections so motorists will see them better.

The double-flashing yellow light will be installed on southbound Pacific Island Drive about 360 feet north of Casalero Drive, Rogers said.

“The light will be a little more eye-catching,” Rogers said.

Of the four new pedestrian signs, Rogers said, two will be erected along southbound Pacific Island Drive just before the Flying Cloud Drive and Starview Lane intersections--while the other two will be placed in the northbound Pacific Island Drive just before the Starview and Talavera Drive intersections.

The $1,500 needed to pay for the new signs will come from the street maintenance budget.
