Bullfighting Is Barbaric and Cruel

Share

This letter is to express my disgust and revulsion at the article about Aracelli Gonzalez, who chooses to torture and kill bulls (“The Thrill of the Fight,” Jan. 9).

Not only is this woman engaging in the utmost cruelty to animals, but she is a first-class hypocrite. She wanted to be a veterinarian. Please. Veterinarians exhibit care and compassion. PAMELA W. MEYERS

I don’t care that the matadora portrayed in the article is unique because of her gender and what she does for a living. I did not find it tasteful that her picture was displayed proudly showing off the ears of her first kill.

I found it sickening that the line “the thrill of each kill” was used in the article. Since when is the killing of a defenseless animal a thrill?

The writer Simon Romero wrote that some countries have converted to bloodless bullfighting. The notion of why some countries have done so seems to have escaped you.

Simon Romero adorns the accomplishments of the young matadora with family and national tradition.

Although the majesty and richness of Mexico’s cultural heritage is clear, surely we can stop to reconsider such a barbarous event and what it engenders in those who further it.

“The Thrill of the Fight” left me with a compulsion to frame the ears of Aracelli Gonzalez. Of course, being a compassionate and caring person who respects all forms of life, I don’t get pleasure from cruelty.

Gonzalez stated that “bulls are the angriest animals.” Yet, in the same article, she says the bulls are prodded with lances to arouse anger. I’m sure if you were to prod humans with lances, they’d be just as vicious, probably even more so.

What also enraged me about this article is that you actually glorified Gonzalez and her cruel sport. Aren’t there enough caring and courageous people in our society you can glorify? Gonzalez would be the last person I would put on a pedestal.

Bullfighting is against the law in California, so why do you promote this illegal cruelty?
