Alleged Harassment of Gay Man Investigated
Leaders of the Los Angeles gay community Friday urged the Police Department to investigate a reported incident of officers harassing a gay robbery victim.
“We have a message,” said Lorri Jean, executive director of the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. “We will not tolerate hate crimes being perpetrated against our people by the LAPD.”
The alleged incident was reported in the Jan. 22 edition of the New York Times Magazine.
During a ride-along with Rampart Division officers, New York Times reporter Richard Rayner and a photographer allegedly saw seven police officers stand around while an eighth berated a homeless, 19-year-old gay man.
