Helen P. Doolin; Longtime Area Educator

Helen P. Doolin, a much-honored local educator and Camarillo resident since 1943, has died. She was 93.

During her teaching career in Ventura County, Doolin served as director of educational services for the Valley Oaks School District in Thousand Oaks and principal of Somis School. She also taught at Pleasant Valley School in Camarillo and supervised and trained teachers at nine schools for the county’s superintendent of schools office.

After her retirement in 1964, she remained active in teaching, returning as director of student teachers at then-California Lutheran College. She was named a Dona by the Pleasant Valley Historical Society in 1992.

Doolin was born in Janesville, Wis., grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1926.

She is survived by daughter Kathie Tobias of Camarillo, and stepson Fred Doolin Jr. of Florence, Ore. She is also survived by three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Camarillo is handling the arrangements. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, 1251 E. Las Posas Road, Camarillo. Burial is private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made to St. Columba’s preschool scholarship fund.
