Tremaine Fowlkes scored a career-high 24 points and California kept up its mastery of UCLA on the fourth-ranked Bruins’ home court with a 100-93 victory Saturday.

Cal (11-5, 3-4 Pacific 10), the only team to beat UCLA at home last season, won its third in a row at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA (12-2, 6-2) had its six-game winning streak snapped and fell into a tie with Arizona for the Pac-10 lead.

Fowlkes, a 6-foot-6 freshman out of Crenshaw High, single-handedly lifted the Golden Bears out of a tight game with nine consecutive points late in the second half.

UCLA played catch-up most of the first half and never led in the second. The Bruins got within one on a basket by George Zidek with 15:31 left and tied the game three times after that. Fowlkes broke the last tie with a three-pointer that started a 14-3 run, including 12 points of his own, and put Cal ahead, 77-66, with 7:14 to play.

Fowlkes’ spurt came with both Ed O’Bannon and Charles O’Bannon on the bench for UCLA. Ed, whose 16 points in the first half kept the Bruins in the game, picked up his fourth foul with 11:45 left. He fouled out with 20 seconds remaining.

Cal held the Bruins scoreless for a 1:07 span in the final minutes using a zone defense that stymied UCLA throughout the game.

Ed O’Bannon led UCLA with 23 points and Tyus Edney added 21 points and two steals. His total of 190 steals broke UCLA’s career record of 189 set by Pooh Richardson from 1986-89.
