Fillmore Builds Wall After Laying 69 Bricks

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Volume, volume, volume.

That could be the motto of the Fillmore High girls’ basketball team.

The Flashes struggled to shoot 30% Tuesday night, but they put up so many shots it didn’t matter in a 64-42 Tri-Valley League victory over Carpinteria.

Guard Christie Rosenblad’s basket with 13 seconds to play was Fillmore’s 99th shot from the field and 30th successful one.

“It was just a matter of time before we put some in,” said Jeff Fauver, Fillmore’s first-year coach.

Fillmore (16-2, 5-1) avenged an earlier 58-57 loss to Carpinteria (12-6, 4-2) and remained in first place in the league race.

“La Reina is next, then we’ve got it,” said Rosenblad, a sophomore who scored 19 points and added nine assists.

A distinct height advantage enabled Fillmore to dominate the backboards. Fillmore outrebounded Carpinteria, 64-21, which enabled the Flashes to continue shooting.

And shooting.

“The same thing happened to us against them last time,” Fillmore’s Julie Arundell said.

Danielle Stines added 16 points for Fillmore and Arundell contributed eight points and eight rebounds. However, it was the front line of Jodie Foy and April Kozar who dominated.

Kozar came off the bench for six points and 22 rebounds. Foy had six points and 16 rebounds.

“The girls were fired up,” said Fauver, who inherited a team that went 9-11 last season.

Shelby Reed scored 15 points and Kirsten Candaele added 14 for Carpinteria.
