REGION : MTA Cancels Service on 2 Area Bus Routes

South Bay area commuters may find it harder to get around, now that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has closed two bus routes linking the area to Downtown Los Angeles.

The MTA last week canceled Lines 443 (Downtown to Palos Verdes) and 447 (Downtown to Long Beach). Service was reduced on a third route, Line 445 (Downtown to San Pedro), which serves about 150 people a day.

All three lines were originally scheduled for shutdown last summer, but Los Angeles County Supervisor Deane Dana persuaded the MTA to conduct surveys of ridership levels first. MTA officials determined that ridership on the Palos Verdes and Long Beach lines did not justify continuing service.

None of the system’s remaining 196 bus routes will be affected by the closures, spokesman Steve Chesser said.

Last year, the MTA reported a $126-million budget deficit. The two closures will save the agency about $700,000 annually, Chesser said.
