COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Liefer Helps Long Beach With 4 RBIs

Jeff Liefer had two hits and four runs batted in to help Long Beach State to a 6-4 victory over Washington State in a nonconference baseball game Saturday at Blair Field.

Liefer’s RBI double in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie. The 49ers (2-0) added two runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Nic Frank had two hits and scored two runs for the 49ers, who had 10 hits. Washington State (0-3) had 11.

Freshman Marcus Jones gave up one run on seven hits to earn his first victory. Gabe Gonzalez gave up one hit in the ninth inning to earn his first save.

In other nonconference baseball:

Cal State Los Angeles 6, Concordia 2--Jason Secoda pitched a two-hitter and Robert Burns and Don Kinney each had two hits for visiting Los Angeles (1-0).

UC San Diego 16-8, Southern California College 4-6--Sophomore Ila Borders gave up six runs, four earned, nine hits and struck out one in 3 2/3 innings in the second game.

Borders, who finished last season 2-4 with a 2.92 earned-run average, suffered her first collegiate loss last year to the Tritons.

The SCC defense committed four errors in each of the two games, dropping the Vanguards to 0-4. UC San Diego is 2-0.

In collegiate tennis:

SCC duo wins first round--Southern California College’s Mattlas Johansson and Davey Robbins advanced to the second round before losing in the No. 1 doubles bracket of the San Diego Intercollegiate tennis tournament at the University of San Diego.

Johansson and Robbins defeated USD’s Frank Morgan and Mike Paradowski, 8-6, in the first round, but lost to Pepperdine’s Mashide Sakamoto and Ross Duncan, 8-2, in the second round.

In the Nos. 5 and 6 singles bracket, Cal Lutheran’s Ilya Chorny lost in the second round to San Diego’s Brian Jacobsen, 6-1, 6-0. Chorny defeated Tad Crayton of Loyola Marymount, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4, in the first round.

Finals will be played today beginning at 9 a.m.

In nonconference men’s swimming:

UC Irvine 171, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 109--Rich Sarkisian won the 1,000 freestyle in 9 minutes 55.87 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 4:52.46 for host Irvine. Pat Keenan also won two events--the 200 freestyle (1:45.55) and the 100 butterfly (52.27)--for the Anteaters.

In nonconference women’s swimming:

UC Irvine 76, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 63; Pepperdine 94, UC Irvine 46--Amerie Nordberg won the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.14 for host Irvine.

In nonconference softball:

Loyola Marymount 4-1, Concordia 3-2--Loyola’s Jenny Chambers pitched a one-hitter in the second game, but Concordia (1-1) scored two runs on three errors in the first inning. Nani Lauriano had two hits and an RBI in the first game for the Eagles.
