Ventura County’s measles epidemic has spread to as many as 68 people, health officials said.

Currently, there are 31 confirmed cases and another 37 probable cases awaiting blood test confirmation, officials said. Anyone who believes they may have been infected should call the county Public Health Department or their physician immediately, officials said.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that is easily spread through secretions from the nose and throat that can be airborne.

The first symptoms--a high fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes--typically show up about 10 days after exposure. A blotchy, red rash usually follows in three to seven days.

Although measles is usually benign, possible complications can include pneumonia, infection of the cornea, middle-ear infections and brain damage. In rare cases, measles can be fatal.

A special immunization clinic will operate from 1:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1201 E. Paseo, Camarillo.

Children should receive their first measles vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age. A second shot can be given after age 4. Adults and teens who haven’t had their second immunization are urged to get one.
