CSUN to Honor Recovery Efforts

It was the thousands of individuals, working within and through community organizations, who brought the sometimes elusive dream of rebuilding after last year’s quake to reality.

That is the simple truth that Cal State Northridge hopes to honor and encourage next week during a tribute to those who contributed to the city’s and the university’s recovery.

CSUN has set aside Feb. 17 as Community Awareness Day at the university. Hundreds of community-based, nonprofit organizations from throughout Los Angeles are expected to participate in the daylong tribute.

Participating groups, primarily those seeking student interns and to expand their volunteer base, will set up exhibits on the west side of the Matador Bookstore from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

“Thousands of volunteers and professionals working through dozens of community nonprofit organizations helped speed this community’s recovery, and they continue to provide services that make this a better community,” said university President Blenda J. Wilson.

“They get very little recognition and most people are not aware at all of the role they play, the services they provide and the thousands of ways in which they make this community a better city.”

CSUN also plans a special ceremony at the same location at 12:30 p.m. to pay tribute to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services.
