From Associated Press

Ottawa accomplished two things Monday night at home.

The Senators won their first game of the season in their ninth try, and they registered their first shutout in franchise history.

That took more than two seasons.

The Senators scored early and outhit the Philadelphia Flyers in a 3-0 victory.

“We gave them a chance and they took advantage of it,” said Flyer forward Eric Lindros. “We weren’t sharp to start, and before we knew it we were down by two (goals).”

Don Beaupre made 34 saves for the shutout, turning back a penalty shot by Mark Recchi.

Beaupre agreed with Lindros.

“Our emotion came up,” said Beaupre. “Our confidence came up. Our enthusiasm came up. We took it right to them through the whole game.”

Alexandre Daigle opened the scoring 71 seconds into the game and about 10 minutes later Alexei Yashin made it 2-0 on a power-play goal.

Toronto 7, San Jose 3--Dave Andreychuk scored two of the Maple Leafs’ five power-play goals in a victory at Toronto that broke streak in which the Sharks were 5-0-1.

San Jose had been killing power plays at a 91.6% rate, best in the NHL.

Terry Yake, Dave Ellett and Mats Sundin also scored on power plays as Toronto scored on each of its first five manpower advantages.

Winnipeg 5, Calgary 4--Dallas Drake scored with 18 seconds left to rally the Jets, who halted a five-game winless streak with a victory at Calgary.

Drake took a pass from Nelson Emerson just over the blue line and cut right into the low slot before trickling a wrist shot past Trevor Kidd.

Winnipeg’s Teemu Selanne, who missed a penalty shot 6:11 into the third period, scored his seventh goal of the season to tie it, 4-4.

Backup goaltender Ron Tugnutt, sidelined because of a tender left knee the last two weeks, was activated by the Montreal Canadiens.
