BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Buena Wins With Defense

Guard Eboni Conley had 14 points and seven assists, but it was backcourt mate Kara Newman who sparked the Buena High girls’ basketball team to a 69-33 Channel League-clinching victory Tuesday over Ventura at Ventura College.

Newman, a senior guard, limited Ventura’s Ember Brown to only five points. Brown has committed to play at Long Beach State next season. Jeanie Chenoweth scored 12 points for Ventura, which trailed, 33-11, at halftime.

Nicole Greathouse had 13 points, while Rachel Buck added 10 points for Buena, which won its 17th consecutive game.

Simi Valley 93, Royal 38--Tawnee Cooper scored 23 points and Jamie Griffin added 12 and eight steals for the Pioneers (21-4, 11-2) in a Marmonte League game at Royal. Heidi Petz scored 14 points for Royal.

Crescenta Valley 70, Hoover 25--Amirah Leonard scored 27 points and Michelle Greco added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the visiting Falcons (20-6, 7-2), who led, 41-11, at halftime.

Alemany 68, Louisville 37--Samantha Rigley had 17 points and Carly Funicello added 12 for the Indians (19-4, 9-0) in a Mission League romp at Alemany.

Becky Witt had 11 points and six assists for Louisville (10-11, 4-5).

Notre Dame 55, Chaminade 28--Maggie Dixon scored 18 points for the Knights at Notre Dame.

The Knights (17-5, 8-1) play Alemany for the Mission League title Thursday at College of the Canyons.

Oak Park 56, La Reina 46--Alexa Valavanis scored 17 points and Alisha Valavanis added 13 for the host Eagles (14-8, 5-3) in a Tri-Valley League game. Shane Anderson scored 19 points for La Reina (9-11, 6-3).

Fillmore 85, St. Bonaventure 44--Julie Arundell had 21 points and 10 rebounds as visiting Fillmore (19-2, 8-1) clinched the Tri-Valley League title at St. Bonaventure.

Westlake 52, Agoura 41--Katie Spayde scored 21 points for the host Warriors (9-16, 6-7) in a Marmonte League game.

North Hollywood 64, Monroe 35--Anna Celaya had 16 points, six steals and eight assists as the host Huskies (18-2, 9-0) won their 15th consecutive game. Shirley Sotero-Higa scored 11 points for Monroe (12-7, 6-4).

BOYS

Crescenta Valley 99, Hoover 71--Junior point guard Jake Willis had 12 assists in a Pacific League game at Hoover, giving him the second highest single-season total in school history.

Willis, who has 229 assists this season, surpassed Brian Goorjian’s 228. The record of 244 belongs to Greg Goorjian. Crescenta Valley (23-1, 8-1) has one regular-season game remaining.

Brock Jacobsen led the Falcons with 27 points. Eric Jenkins scored 37 to lead Hoover (2-20, 0-9).

Muir 58, Glendale 55--Duane Curtis scored 23 points, including the final four, as visiting Muir (16-8, 4-5) rebounded from a 55-54 deficit in the last minute of a Pacific League game. Arnae Boghossian scored 13 points and Joe Kurdoglanyan added 12 for Glendale (11-12, 2-7).

Buena 54, Ventura 39--Reserve guard Ryan Howery scored 15 points in the fourth quarter for Buena (15-8, 9-4) in a Channel League game at Ventura College.

Donte Lincoln scored 17 points for Ventura (4-18, 2-11), which trailed, 30-28, at the start of the final period.

Highland 79, Littlerock 71--John Burrell scored 23 points, Carl Biel added 22 and Jamal Dedeaux threw in 18 for Highland (17-6, 6-3) in a Golden League game at Littlerock.

La Canada 70, Blair 58--Todd Wise scored 20 points for the Spartans (17-7, 9-0) in a Rio Hondo League game at La Canada.

North Hollywood 61, Reseda 53--Shannon Johnson scored 18 points for the Huskies (14-9, 7-3) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Reseda.

North Hollywood’s Arthur Lee, who finished with 10 points, made five of six free throws in the final 1 minute 43 seconds of the game.

WOMEN

Cal Lutheran 89, Pomona-Pitzer 75--Kelli McCaskill had 30 points while Evi Orolagas added 23 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for the Regals (20-0, 8-0) in an SCIAC victory at Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran is now riding a 22-game winning streak.

Reserve Shani Smyth added 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Regals.
