Pepperdine’s 86-61 Loss Is Worst at Home Since ’78

Pepperdine committed five turnovers and made only one of five shots in the first four minutes and ended up falling to Gonzaga, 86-61, Friday night in a West Coast Conference game before 1,463 at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The loss was Pepperdine’s worst home defeat since 1978 and it snapped a four-game home winning streak.

Pepperdine Coach Tony Fuller called time out when the score reached 11-2, but there was no stopping Gonzaga.

The Bulldogs, 14-7 overall and 3-6 in the WCC, finished with nine three-point shots in 14 attempts.

The Waves (7-14, 3-6) trailed, 44-20, after the first half, when they shot 28.6% and were hurt by foul trouble. Guard Gerald Brown, the team’s leading scorer, had no points in the first half after sitting out nearly 10 minutes because of fouls.

Brown scored 12 points in the second half, but it wasn’t nearly enough. He was the only Pepperdine starter who scored in double figures. Freshman guard R.J. Powell scored 14 points to lead the Waves, who shot 40.4% and committed 18 turnovers.

Jon Kinloch scored a game-high 19 points for Gonzaga.
