BOYS’ SOCCER ROUNDUP : Rullo Steps Up to Give Servite an Overtime Victory

Freshman Sean Rullo scored the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime to give Servite a 2-1 victory over Tustin and a third-place finish in league. With the loss, Tustin (9-8-3, 5-4-1) finished in fourth place and out of the playoffs.

Rullo, brought up from junior varsity to replace injured players, scored his first varsity goal on a free kick he bent around the wall and into the net.

Reggie Currie gave Tustin a 1-0 lead 47 minutes into the first half and freshman Anthony Binunzio tied the score in the 60th minute for Servite (8-12, 6-4).

In the Empire League:

Century 5, Kennedy 3--Steve Cervantes scored three goals for Century (7-8-2, 3-6-1).

Cypress 4, Katella 1--Bryan Huskey, Brad Dunaway, Luis Zavala and Greg Cleave scored for visiting Cypress (17-3-4, 7-1-2).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 4, La Habra 2 (OT)--Alejandro Sanchez scored one goal and Fullerton scored on an own-goal in overtime. Ryan Gregory and Louis Lopez also scored for the Indians (7-11-3, 3-6-1). Mike Shumaker had 15 saves, giving him 551 in his career. Mark Lamb scored for host La Habra (9-5-3, 5-3-1), which will get the Freeway League’s third playoff berth. The Highlanders also scored on an own-goal.

Sunny Hills 3, Buena Park 1--Adam Bellar, Andy Volpp, and Davis Lee each scored for fourth-ranked Sunny Hills (18-3-1, 9-0-1), this year’s league champion. Jose Barrera scored a first-half goal for Buena Park (5-13-2, 1-9).

In the Golden West League:

Santa Ana 1, Saddleback 0 (OT)--Juan Herrera scored four minutes into the first overtime as Santa Ana (12-54-2, 8-1-1) captured the league title. The Saints’ Edgar Perez made 10 saves in recording his ninth shutout. Saddleback (12-5-2, 6-2-2) finished second.

Westminster 2, Ocean View 1--Leo Gimenez and Tim Holmes each scored for Westminster (5-13-3, 1-8-1). Erik Vinland scored for Ocean View (1-8-1 in league).

In the Olympic League:

Ontario Christian 5, Orange Lutheran 1--Jason Gaudy scored all five goals for Ontario Christian (14-7-2, 8-1-1), four in the first 10 minutes of the game. Josh Nelson scored for Orange Lutheran (16-4-4, 5-3-2), which advances to the playoffs.

In the Orange League:

Anaheim 2, Magnolia 1--Jose Sanchez and Juan Lopez had first-half goals for Anaheim (8-6-6, 6-2-2), which clinched second place in league and a playoff berth.

Brea Olinda 3, Valencia 0--Mark Kachner, Todd Beck and David Alexander scored for Brea Olinda (14-3-5, 8-0-2), which captured the league title for the third consecutive year. Stephen Huerth had seven saves for Valencia (7-8-5, 3-3-4).

Savanna 1, Western 0--Walter Altamirano scored in the first half and Jose Albarrau had 11 saves in the shutout for Savanna (6-10-3, 2- 8).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 2, Costa Mesa 0--Junior Jason Balogh scored early in the second half and senior Charlie Nobel scored the game-winning goal with 23 minutes left for Laguna Hills (9-11-2, 4-6). Costa Mesa finishes 7-6-4, 3-5-2.

University 4, Aliso Niguel 1--Jeff Majit scored two goals for visiting University (12-5-2, 7-2-1), which won the league title.

In the Sea View League:

El Toro 1, Irvine 0--El Toro clinched third place in league and a playoff berth when Brian Roney scored with 10 minutes remaining to break a scoreless tie.

Newport Harbor 1, Woodbridge 1--Ryan Hoover’s goal 10 minutes into the second half gave the eighth-ranked Sailors (16-6-4, 2-4-4) the tie.

Daniel Chung scored 20 minutes into the first half, giving Woodbridge (16-5-2, 8-0-2), ranked second in the county, a 1-0 lead. In a battle of goalkeepers, Steve Kleha had six saves for Newport Harbor and Jason Ruggerello had four saves for Woodbridge.

Santa Margarita 2, Corona del Mar 1--Miguel Godoy scored late in the first half, breaking a 1-1 tie for host Santa Margarita (20-1-3, 7-1-2), which enters the playoffs as a second-place finisher. Brian Hawley posted 21 saves for Corona del Mar.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 2, Marina 0--Dan Soleymani and Todd Marcus each scored for visiting Edison (14-5-4, 7-3), which finished second in league. Bob Yorke had 10 saves for Marina (4-15-0, 0-10.)

Fountain Valley 2, Esperanza 1--Nick Tolmen and Joey Vasquez scored for Fountain Valley (19-3, 9-1), which clinched its league Wednesday.
