Several San Gabriel Valley-area schools were seeded for the Southern Section boys’ and girls’ basketball playoffs, which began earlier this week.

In boys’ basketball, Nogales was seeded second behind Mater Dei in Division 1-A. Glendora was seeded fourth.

Pasadena was second and Arroyo third in 2-AA. La Salle was fourth in 4-AA and Pasadena Poly first in 5-A.

In girls’ basketball, Diamond Bar was the top-seeded team in 1-AA. Muir was third in 2-A. Pasadena Poly was second in 5-AA.

* First-round games in the Southern Section boys’ and girls’ soccer playoffs will be played Friday and Saturday.

Here is a list of games involving area boys’ teams that will be played Friday:

Division I--Fontana at Claremont; Damien-Esperanza winner at Redlands.

Division II--Rowland at Bishop Montgomery; Orange at Diamond Bar; Keppel at Gahr; Beverly Hills at Bishop Amat.

Division III--Pasadena at Alta Loma; Arlington at Pomona; Wilson or Sante Fe at Arroyo Grande; Highland at Arcadia; Garey at Loyola.

First-round girls’ games on Saturday include:

Division I--Winner of Santa Monica-St. Lucy’s at Simi Valley; El Toro at Claremont.

Division II--Santa Barbara-Notre Dame winner at South Pasadena; Rosary-Temple City winner at Mira Costa; La Canada at Arcadia; Muir-Bishop Amat winner at Alta Loma.

Division III--Riverside Poly-Diamond Bar winner at Norco; Hart-Charter Oak winner at Quartz Hill; Rowland-California winner at Pasadena Poly; Whittier at Walnut.

* El Monte High will be the site of the Southern Section individual Division I wrestling championships Friday and Saturday.

A.B. Miller will play host to the Division II finals, Downey Division to III and Santiago to Division IV.

The Southern Section Masters Meet is scheduled for Feb. 25 and the state championships will be staged March 3-4 at the University of Pacific.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

San Gabriel Valley community colleges have provided four-year schools with a plethora of players for next season. The players are either already at the schools or are finishing course work to transfer at the end of the semester.

Mt. San Antonio College players who have transferred or will transfer include: Marvin Allen (tight end, Portland State); Molech Blythe (safety, Nevada); Larry Brown (receiver, New Mexico); Tony Campbell (receiver, Missouri Western); Charles Hatcher (defensive lineman, Oregon State); Jimmie Irby (defensive lineman, Texas A&M;); Brent Malili (fullback, Oregon State); Bertrand Martin (receiver, New Mexico); John Mickuki (tight end, Oregon State); Cody Lee Smith (quarterback, Kansas State); Brandon Tucker (defensive line, Midwestern State); Brian Van Hook (offensive lineman, Wayne State); Byron Walker (cornerback, Weber State) and Richard Witherspoon (linebacker, Southern Arkansas).

Pasadena College transfers will include: Esaul Viramontes (center, Cincinnati); Karl Hubmann (offensive line, Northern Arizona); Brian Brison (running back, Clark Atlanta University); Kenny Haywood (defensive back, Texas Tech); Daniel Stewart (defensive back, Nevada); Clifton Isaac (defensive back, Sam Houston State); Jamal Brooks (linebacker, Hampton, Va., University) and Ryshaun Mosley (defensive end, Wayne State).

Citrus players include: Todd Davidson (defensive lineman, Azusa Pacific); Chris Gutierrez (kicker, Bemidji State, Minn.); Anthony Laing (lineman, Bemidji State); Greg Pollard (tight end, Chico State); J.J. Johnson (defensive end, Azusa Pacific) and Justin Ventura (kicker, Eastern Michigan).

COLLEGES

La Verne University inducted six former athletes into its Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremonies last weekend.

The inductees included:

* Eileen Kamidoi Kaiser, from the class of 1983, who was the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the year in volleyball in 1981 and 1982.

* Mary Butters Killinger (1964, tennis, basketball, volleyball, softball and bowling).

* Mark Lehmer (1928, football, basketball, baseball, and track and field).

* Nick Leyva (1975, baseball).

* Orville (Tommy) Thompson (1931, football, basketball, baseball and track and field).

* Vernon (Red) Weybright (1931, football, basketball and baseball).

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, ranked 20th in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics, plays a key Golden State Athletic Conference game against Biola Saturday in La Mirada.

Azusa Pacific clinched its third consecutive 20-victory season last weekend by defeating Southern California College, 87-71. The Cougars entered the week 20-7 and 9-1 in the GSAC. A victory over Biola sets up a showdown for the conference title next week against Westmont.

Raymond Tutt is averaging 26.7 points, Deric Daniels 17.7, Eric Wattree 12.7 and Tim Sebek 11.3 for the Cougars.

* The Azusa Pacific women’s basketball team is also in the hunt for a GSAC title on the strength of a six-game winning streak. The Cougars entered the week 10-14 and tied for second-place with Concordia at 6-3.

Christy Brock is averaging 18.6 points for the Cougars. Suzy Hassell is averaging 14 points and Christy Heyer 10.1.

* Amy Cleveland is averaging 19 points a game for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s basketball team, which is ranked 10th in NCAA Division III.

Claremont entered the week 18-3 and 7-1 in the South Coast Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Claremont was in second place behind Cal Lutheran (21-0, 9-0).

Mindy Begatelos is averaging 9.2 rebounds for Claremont.

* The Azusa Pacific softball team, under first-year Coach Sharon Lehman, will try to rebound from last season’s 18-23 record when the Cougars open play Friday at UC Riverside.

Azusa Pacific had three consecutive 30-victory seasons before last year.

Top returning players include sophomore third baseman Dawn Castaneda, who batted .426, senior outfielder Liz Campbell (.362), senior first baseman April Reed (.351) and junior pitcher Stacy Shoan (8-4, 1.68 earned-run average in conference play).

* The Azusa Pacific baseball team opens play today in the Wildcat Invitational tournament at Chico State.

Azusa Pacific entered the week 5-2 after defeating La Verne, losing to Chico State and splitting a doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona.

Cougar right-hander Brian Hagerty improved to 3-0 with a 0.90 earned-run average after earning victories over La Verne and Pomona.

* The SCIAC men’s and swimming championships begin today at the Cerritos Aquatics Center.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men enter the meet with a 5-0 record. The Pomona-Pitzer women are also 5-0.

PREP OF THE WEEK

Jhenia Pringle, Garey--Pringle, a Times All-San Gabriel Valley player last season, scored 18 points and had nine rebounds in a 43-36 Miramonte League victory over Wilson.

Pringle helped Garey end Wilson’s 28-game winning streak in league play.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Christy Brock, Azusa Pacific--Brock, a freshman, helped the Cougar women’s basketball team extend its winning streak to six games with her performances against Point Loma Nazarene and Southern California College.

Brock, a 5-foot-9 forward, scored 22 points in a 66-49 victory over Pt. Loma and 21 in a 56-46 victory over Southern California College. Brock is averaging 18.6 points and 4.6 rebounds for Azusa Pacific, which entered the week in second place in the GSAC.

MISCELLANY

The Pomona-based Puno de Oro boxing program, for youths ages 8 to 17, is accepting registration. The gym is located at 850 East Grand Ave. in Pomona. Information: (909) 629-5494.

CALENDAR

Registration has begun for men’s and co-ed softball leagues sponsored by the city of Rosemead.

Fees are $320 a team for a 10-game schedule.

Registration will also be open for a co-ed volleyball league. Cost is $125 a team for a 10-game schedule.

* The city of Covina is accepting registration for adult softball leagues. Competition will be open in men’s D, men’s C/D, co-ed D and women’s D divisions.

Play begins Feb. 27. Cost is $440 before Friday, $465 from Monday through Wednesday.

The city is also accepting registration for roller hockey and pee-wee and youth track programs.

The roller hockey program is for ages 6 to 15 and will consist of five practice sessions and nine games, plus playoffs for qualified teams. Play begins in April.

The pee-wee program is for ages 5 to 7 and the youth program is for ages 8 to 11. Youngsters will learn fundamentals of events and will participate in the Mt. SAC Invitational youth days and Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation meets.
