SIGNAL HILL : Ex-City Official Gets His Way--an Alley, That Is
After being forced to spend $19,000 to build an alley, former City Councilman George E. Papadakis figured that the least the city could do was name it after him.
The City Council agreed, naming the new alley Papadakis Way and kicking in a $125 street sign.
The alley, which runs parallel to Obispo and Freeman avenues, extends 200 feet from 20th Street to a new house Papadakis built on Obispo. Although the road benefits several other property owners, Papadakis paid the entire cost, he said.
Papadakis, a 36-year resident who served on the council 12 years, was required to build an alley leading to the garage behind the new house because the city discourages access from busy streets such as Obispo.
