SOUTHERN SECTION WRESTLING DUAL-MEET TEAM PRELIMINARIES : Calvary Chapel Rolls Through the Competition

Share

Calvary Chapel Coach John Azevedo wanted to get into the action after his top-ranked Eagles dominated No. 6 El Modena, 62-6, in the Southern Section Division I dual-meet wrestling preliminaries Wednesday at Calvary Chapel.

Josh Saul, son of former Ram center Rich Saul, was daring enough to go to the mat with the 120-pound former world-class wrestler, who quickly taught the freshman a lesson in technique while giving up more than 50 pounds.

It’s a lesson the seven other teams learned in the meet as Calvary Chapel won 36 of 39 matches by a combined score of 188-9.

“I thought we started a little slow in the first match of the day, but we picked it up,” Azevedo said.

The Eagles’ slow start consisted of 13 consecutive victories against Fontana in the first round for a 66-0 victory.

Calvary Chapel (20-0) then rolled past El Monte Arroyo, 60-3. Arroyo had defeated Mater Dei to reach the round.

El Modena, the Century League champions, advanced to the third round with victories over Western and fourth-seeded Oxnard Rio Mesa, 44-26.

“We’re just happy to still be here,” El Modena Coach Alan Clinton said before the match with Calvary Chapel.

The Eagles began with first-period pins from Tino Archuleta and Burt Pierson before Milo Ventimiglia, ranked second in the county at 121 pounds, won a 6-1 decision over Xavier Wilder for El Modena’s first points.

Calvary Chapel then won seven of the next nine matches by pins and also received a 17-2 technical fall from Chris Mieneke at 175 pounds.

El Modena (16-6) wrestled their final match without Aaron Santana, who is ranked third in the county at 154 pounds, and heavyweight David Saucedo.

However, 191-pound Dan Kingman moved up to heavyweight and gave the Vanguards their second victory with a 14-7 decision over Mike Pawasart.
