Police arrested an 18-year-old woman on suspicion of murder after the body of her newborn boy was found Wednesday wrapped in a cloth in her bedroom closet.

Bertha Delgado Hernandez was being held at the Orange County Central Women’s Jail after being treated at Coastal Communities Hospital in Santa Ana for bleeding. When she was brought in for treatment, medical personnel were suspicious that she had given birth. They contacted police and asked them to check the woman’s house, in the 2500 block of South Rita Way, according to Sgt. Bob Clark.

Hernandez, who said she came to Santa Ana four to five months ago from Mexico, denied to doctors that she had given birth, Clark said. But when officers arrived at the house, which Hernandez shared with others from her town in Mexico, a resident of the house had just discovered the full-term infant’s body.

Other residents of the house told police that Hernandez had concealed both the birth and the pregnancy from them.
